The late Joseph J. Ustynoski (1921-2003) was one of seven children born of Ukrainian immigrants, who raised their family on a coal miner’s salary in West Hazleton, Pennsylvania. He attended Albright College in Reading, Pennsylvania, where he majored in English and History and completed a four year Bachelor’s degree in two years. He then attended the Dickinson School of Law from which he received his Juris Doctor in 1954.
Attorney Joseph J. Ustynoski began the practice of law in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, in 1955, in a one-room office in the same building which now houses the firm of Ustynoski & Marusak, LLC. His first client paid him for his legal services by installing a carpet in his office.
He went on to hold many distinguished positions, including Solicitor for the Borough of West Hazleton, Solicitor for the Greater Hazleton Joint Sewer Authority, a Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Workers’ Compensation Judge, and a Luzerne County Assistant District Attorney. He became President of the Wilkes-Barre Law and Library Association and was appointed to the Lawyer’s Advisory Committee of the U.S. Federal District Court. On top of all this, he was considered by many to be the top civil trial attorney in Luzerne County.
He was a founding member of the law firm Falvello, Ustynoski, Giuliani, & Bernstein, which, up until December 31, 1977 was one of the largest and most prestigious firms in the City of Hazleton. Following that firm’s dissolution, he founded Ustynoski, Sharkey, & Marusak, a partnership which served clients in the Hazleton community until September 30, 1992. Thereafter, he served as Senior Partner in Ustynoski & Marusak from October 1, 1992 until the date of his death, January 8, 2003.
